Hints, tips and how help refills

Every garden can be solved with logic alone, but sometimes it’s nice to have a friend in the grass. The game has two kinds of help, and they’re quite different.

A hint lights a lantern

A hint finds one of the hidden lanterns and lights it for you. It also marks the row, column, coloured area and surrounding patches with an X, so the board is tidy afterwards. It’s the bigger help of the two, and it gives the most away.

A tip gives you a nudge

A garden with a tip open: a soft glow on a short stretch of one row, with the message This row’s lantern is somewhere in the glow, and the rest of that row marked with an X.
A tip: this row’s lantern is somewhere in the glow.

A tip doesn’t light anything. It picks a row or column and makes a short stretch of it glow, two or three patches long. The message says that line’s lantern is somewhere in the glow, and the rest of the line is marked with an X for you. The last step is yours.

If you close a tip, you can read the same tip again for free.

How much help you have

You start with 3 hints and 3 tips. They carry from garden to garden, so the number on each button is what you have left overall, not per garden. Winning a garden doesn’t refill them by itself. There are two ways to get more.

Gifts from the garden

The gift picker: the words The garden has a gift for you, above a Hint tile and a Tip tile to choose from.
A gift is your choice of a hint or a tip.

Now and then a win reaches a milestone, and the garden gives you a gift: you choose one hint or one tip. These are the milestones:

You get one gift per win. If two milestones land on the same win, the second waits for your next one. Replays, losses and the tutorial don’t count towards any of them. Gifts can take a kind up to 5.

A short ad, if you ask

When a kind runs out and you tap it, you can choose to watch a short ad for one more. It’s always your choice, and a finished ad gives you exactly the one you asked for. It needs a connection and an ad being available. There are limits to keep things fair:

Does help affect anything else?

Only your points. Using any hint or tip halves what that win earns on the weekly leaderboard. The win itself still counts in full for your journey and your streak.
